Day 22

All Things Relevant

But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative- that is, the Holy Spirit- he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you- John 14:26

You quickly learned that renewing your mind isn’t as easy as saying “I no longer think that way, I now think this way.”  Sure that is a good place to start, but that is simply what it is- just a start.  Completely renewing your mind takes some time.  Some time and some help.

 Someone who can help you when you are not sure what to do.  Someone who speaks gently, not harshly to you.  Someone who simply whispers things like “that is not the best choice for you right now”.  Someone who leads you to the bookshelf and prompts you to pick a certain nutrition book.  Someone who wakes you when you forget to set your alarm to workout.  Someone who cheers you on when nobody else seems to notice your efforts.  Someone to cry to when you are hungry and tired.  Someone to celebrate with when your skinny jeans zip up.  \

Sounds like an awesome Someone doesn’t it?  Trust me, you will never find this Someone in another person.  They don’t exist.  They don’t exist because they are just like you- fleshly creatures of habit trying to find their own way just like you are.  Sure it’s good to have friends and family as support, but in order to have 24-7 unconditional support, there is only one person for the job.

That’s right- the Holy Spirit.  Your Advocate.  Your Comforter.  The one who goes before you and sets the stage for your success.  The one who guides you into all truth (John 14:17).  The one who gives you the hope and the power to finish the task (Romans 15:13).  The one who, when allowed to control your mind, leads to life and peace (Romans 8:6).  The one who, as today’s scripture says teaches you everything.

Everything- as in all things, as in all relevant matters (Webster’s).  I think it is safe to say that your health and well being fit into the category of relevant matters- don’t you think?  Today’s verse is telling us that not only will the Holy Spirit teach us more about the love of Christ and how to love Him more, he will also teach us how to live our lives more richly.  He will teach us everything relevant to being a child of the Most High God.  He will teach us everything relevant to victory.  Everything relevant to receiving favor and blessing.  Everything relevant to  success.  I believe your ability to be strong healthy and fit is at the top of the list in relevance to all of these areas.

Now I am not saying that if you are overweight you will not be given blessings, favor, victory, and salvation.  I am saying that in many instances being overweight prevents us from receiving these things.  It all goes back to the emotional and mental feelings we experience when we are in bondage to our eating and unhealthy lifestyle.  God doesn’t turn from us, but many times we turn from God.  I hope you see the difference.

Dear Heavenly Father.  I confess I cannot do this on my own.  I have tried to change my thinking but I often find myself falling into my old habits.  I invite the Holy Spirit to come live and dwell within me.  Guide me into all truth as your Word says.  Please teach me everything relevant to living the life you intended for me to live.  Speak to my heart and guide me today and every day now and forever.  In Jesus’ name, Amen
